Twenty-plus years behind a camera don`t prepare you for a new interface.
When I started working with AI-generated imagery, I felt like a beginner again, clicking through menus, guessing at prompts.
But somewhere in the process, I noticed something hadn`t changed. I still knew what light does at
four in the morning versus noon.
I still knew when a pose was lying, when a frame was honest, before I could even explain why.

The tool changed. The judgment didn`t.

A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO I WROTE ABOUT WORKING ACROSS ANALOG, DIGITAL, HYBRID AND FULLY
AI-GENERATED PHOTOGRAPHY.

THIS IS THE WORK I WAS POINTING TOWARD WITHOUT SHOWING IT YET:
MY FIRST COMPLETE FULLY AI-GENERATED SERIES.
EVERY SCENE HERE STARTED SOMEWHERE REAL. THOSE PLACES STAYED WITH ME,
AND AT SOME POINT I STARTED WONDERING WHO MIGHT ACTUALLY LIVE THERE.

SO I BUILT AN ANSWER: TWO CHARACTERS,
A HANDFUL OF ORDINARY MOMENTS,
A TOWN THAT ONLY EXISTS AS A SET OF GENERATED IMAGES, GROUNDED IN PLACES I HAD GENUINELY WALKED THROUGH WITH A CAMERA.
BEHIND EACH GENERATED IMAGE SITS THE REAL LOCATION THAT GAVE IT ITS SHAPE, PHOTOGRAPHED EXACTLY AS I FOUND IT.

I WAS IN TEXAS 2 YEARS AGO FOR A DOCUMENTARY PROJECT, DRIVING THROUGH
SMALL TOWNS FOR SOMETHING THAT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH FASHION OR
STORYTELLING. THE EMPTY STREETS, THE SUN BLEACHED SIGNS AND THE
PARKING LOTS NOBODY USES ANYMORE STAYED WITH ME.
MONTHS LATER I KEPT COMING BACK TO ONE QUESTION. WHAT IF A COUPLE LIVED
INSIDE THESE PLACES, NOT A REAL COUPLE, NOT A REAL TOWN, BUT A STORY
BUILT ENTIRELY WITH AI, USING THE LIGHT AND THE GEOGRAPHY I HAD ALREADY
SEEN WITH MY OWN EYES.
WHAT CAME OUT OF IT IS THIS SMALL, QUIET FICTION ABOUT TWO PEOPLE WHO
ARE NOT REALLY IN LOVE ANYMORE BUT STILL TOGETHER, HELD IN PLACE BY A
FAMILIARITY THAT IS BOTH COMFORT AND CAGE. EVERY SCENE IN THIS STORY IS
FULLY AI GENERATED. THE THREE EMPTY LOCATIONS IN THIS CAROUSEL ARE THE
ONLY REAL PHOTOGRAPHS HERE, TAKEN ON THAT ORIGINAL TRIP, MONTHS
BEFORE ANY OF THE REST OF THIS EXISTED.
